Default Seat Mods

I have found a very good resource for DIY seat mods. I am thinking about this. I really hate the stock seat, but don't like the corbin, and I don't know how long it will take for Sargent to come out with one. I wonder...

Its funny you posted this today. I was just at the store looking at bicycle gel seats and trying to think of an idea to put more padding on the stock seat. I want to add an inch or two plus padding. I've thought about putting padding on top of the stock seat and then wrapping new vinyl over the stock. That way, I can take off my seat mod and still have the stock one underneath. Any ideas?

Not sure if you guys have seen my post...

Reshaping My Seat - A How To

It uses a lot of the techniques from that site.

Roaddawg, I am considering pulling the cover from my seat and adding another layer of foam. I actually think you can do this and keep the stock cover. You just have to compress it when you staple it.

I saw your thread, but I don't want to mess with the stock seat that way. Plus, being almost 6'4", I was thinking of trying to get another inch or two in height to make it more comfortable.

What if I just leave the stock seat alone, but add some padding on top of the stock cover, then wrap a new piece of vinyl over all of it? I don't think the stock cover has enough material to add another inch or so of padding and I wouldn't want to compress it too much and take the softness out. What do you think?

I actually think that would absolutely work. The only thing is that the cover probably won't look as good as stock due to the wrinkles at corners you won't be able to avoid. I'm wondering if there's a way to pre-shape the vinyl, maybe through heat or something.

Don't know about the wrinkle thing. I'm not thinking of making it loose fitting, I just don't want to compress it so much that it takes out the 'cushness'. I wonder if using a hair dryer as you stretch it around? I don't have much experience with upholstery, but I'm not afraid to try either. When I get some free time (what's that?!?), I'll have to give it a shot.

Hmm... I'm a little doubtful that shorts can change comfort all that much. For me, a comfortable seat needs to be supportive, and needs to have no pressure points. This is achieved through a seat that is broad and contoured to your butt. Padded shorts will have the same effect as putting maybe 1/8th or 1/16th of extra padding on your seat.

I have another idea...what about taking a bicycle gel seat cover (like in pic), put it on top of the stock seat and cut out foam to fill in around it, then cover it with a piece of black vinyl/leather? Just an idea. Or do you think it would be to 'squishy'?
