Default Idle Auto-Shut Off ?

How long should the bike run just idling? Mine runs for a while then shuts down. I took into Yamaha and they stated that is normal and that there is an auto-shut off at 20 mins or so. Have any of you experienced this?

Thanks,

Todd

I recall there is something in the owners manual that confirms the 20 minute idle shut-off. I don't have the manual in front of me otherwise I could give you the page number.

Yup, it's in the manual, page 6-1. But why do you leave your bike idling for 20 min??

I let mine idel for extended warm-ups when its really cold. I waited 15 minutes once and the bike was only at 153 degrees! Granted it was in the teens.

I let it warm up because when you are riding in sub freezing temps shifting becomes very rough unless the bike has been warmed up.

I haven't tested this as I can't see a reason to ever let a bike idle for 20 minutes. But it makes since. The charging system doesn't charge under, I believe 4000 RPM. So idling you're just draining the battery and wasting gas. Probably getting the bike hot too.

In cold temps, you really only need to let it idle until the temp no longer reads "LOW". So for me, at around 112 degrees F, the bike no longer reads "LOW" and it's good to go. Anything beyond that is really just a waste of gas and time. Once you start riding, the engine will warm pretty quickly to operating temps.

+1. I start mine before I put on my balaclava, helmet, and gloves and do a quick walk-around . By the time I'm ready to go, the bikes around 120F (on a 30F morning). By the time I get to the freeway (1 mile), it's more than warmed up.
